I can’t remember exactly where we stayed. It was a Cumbrian Cottages holiday let in Ambleside. As far as I remember we stayed in Ambleside for the whole trip. It is reasonably central, and a pleasant town. So it is a very convenient place to stay.

I’m afraid I don’t have any advice about hiring cars.
