Today the world marks the 30th birthday of the web. I could have said ‘celebrates’ instead of ‘marks’. But despite — or perhaps because of — the fact that it’s the most revolutionary advance in communications of our lifetime, the mood seems reflective rather than celebratory.
I thought I had joined the many people who don’t use their degrees in their careers. But I have come to realise that my degree in social science has been absolutely vital to my web design work.
I think about the web all the time. I like to believe that I get it. But I am still surprised by the advances in technology and the promise the future holds.
No matter how great a design trend feels at the time, we always look back and cringe. What is today’s clanger? I am worried that everything on the web is getting too big.
